Åge Reite is a keyboard player, composer and producer based in Oslo. Together with Rune Berg, he runs Lydbroderiet, a recording studio, label and venue. Having been a parent for nearly twenty-five years, he has spent more hours listening to children's music than he wants to admit, and he's come to think that the best of it deserves to be taken seriously.

"My musical awakening happened when Paul McCartney looked up from his piano and straight through the TV screen at me, sometime in the early eighties. It was a recording of Hey Jude, a world classic. So you can imagine my surprise when the next thing I heard from him was a song about frogs. The Frog Song, or We All Stand Together (1984). It's quite a leap, from Lennon and Harrison to a bunch of frogs, but it charmed me, in all its strangeness. The Beatles showed me that you can really enjoy writing funny, absurd songs for children, even as a grown songwriter. There's a freedom in that, as a musician and a writer, that I like very much. And we've been spoiled here in Norway too, with Knutsen & Ludvigsen and Trond-Viggo Torgersen, among many others. I love Trond-Viggo's 'Røykevise', disguised as an absurd little medieval lute song: smoke your cigarette down to the stub, and it'll lodge in your body like a lump of cheese. It would be fun to write a sequel about parents and their phones, all that scrolling. Children's music isn't kids' stuff. It's important work."
